Mary and Maurie Stark |
Mary and Maurie Stark, both native Iowans, and Maurie from the Webster County region, were generous, selfless and devoted parents and citizens. The Starks raised their six children in Fort Dodge, where Maurie was a respected tax attorney and Mary was a positive, hard-working and dedicated wife, mother and community supporter for many years. Maurie passed away in 2000, and Mary in 2011.
They lived according to the principle, “to whom much has been given, much will be expected.” They strongly supported Catholic education, their family and the community in which they lived.
The Starks’ estate made a bequest to an unrestricted endowed fund at the Fort Dodge Community Foundation. Maurie and Mary wanted to ensure that their estate would continue to support the community in which they lived, worked and raised their family.
Both Maurie and Mary understood that the community’s needs would be changing and fluid, so they didn't want “strings attached” to their donated funds. They wanted the funds to be used to support immediate needs in the community that advance quality of life and the common good.
Many Fort Dodgers will fondly remember Mary as she canvassed the community, gently soliciting support for the St. Edmond Catholic Schools’ ‘St. Edmond Ball’. She always sold the most raffle tickets for the Ball - and many raffle ticket winners have her to thank for winning generous prizes and cars they won at the annual St. Edmond Ball.
