Family Nutrition Program

The Family Nutrition Program is a free program offered through Iowa State University Extension & Outreach, Webster County, which includes 2 separate curriculums. The Buy. Eat. Live Healthy program is geared for limited income households with children ages 18 and under and consists of 8 sessions providing education on nutrition and healthy eating, food budgeting, saving money at the grocery store, hands-on cooking and food tasting, physical activity and free gifts. Lessons can be provided as a group or individually. Lessons can be given at the extension office, in partnership with an agency or in the home. This series also satisfies 16 continuing education credit hours to qualifying childcare providers. The Plan Shop Save and Cook program is available to limited income individuals 18 years of age and older, regardless of whether they have children. The four-session program is delivered to groups only at various community locations (not offered in the home) and focuses more intently on meal planning, shopping, saving money at the grocery store, understanding nutrition fact panels on food packaging and food resource management and includes food tasting and free gifts. Graduates of both programs receive a certificate and color cookbook upon completion.
